Firstly, ostriches can be over 2 meters tall and weigh more than 160 kg. Larger individuals can exceed 3 meters and 200 kg. They can run at a speed of 60 km/h for more than 30 minutes, making them faster than Usain Bolt. It's well known that modern birds are descendants of dinosaurs, and the ostrich is the largest bird among them.
Although ostriches are known to be quite aggressive and not very bright, their brain structure is primitive, causing them to forget things instantly, which makes them fascinating creatures.
Interestingly, ostriches contribute greatly to society. They have an incredibly strong immune system, and antibodies derived from ostriches are used in masks for the coronavirus.
Typically, mice or rabbits are used to create antibodies, which can cost several tens of thousands of yen. However, with ostriches, antibodies can be produced for just a few yen, making it incredibly cost-effective.
Ostriches have a unique trait where they transfer antibodies to their eggs to protect their chicks. This trait has been harnessed for antibody production.
Currently, masks embedded with ostrich antibodies have been developed, boasting a 99.6% virus removal rate and the ability to catch PM2.5 particles. Spray types that can be inserted directly into the nose and candies have also been developed and are being distributed in places like Africa and Bangladesh.
It is also said to be effective for atopy.
The leading researcher in this field is Professor Tsukamoto from Kyoto Prefectural University in Japan. He has written a book titled "Ostriches are Stupid but Useful," which I read.
